The words are meaningless; the singer's voice goes up and down; her facial expressions seem strange, almost mad. The whole impression of the song is uneasy, which seems meaningful, since the name of the song is Tante(忐忑) — a word that means uneasy.
The singer of Tante is Gong Linna and her song has caused public arguments. Some people love it, and some people hate it, but everyone agrees that it's crazy! It's so crazy that the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) refuses to play it during their games.
I happen to like the song and I think Gong Linna has a wonderful voice. The song seems like Beijing Opera but it is also like western music. In the first half of the 20th century, musicians began writing music without lyrics and it was hard for listeners to understand. Many people thought it was just noise. However, once their ears got used to the new music, they began to like it. They discovered these kinds of writers like Elliott Carter and Virgil Thompson were telling real feelings and ideas.
To some people, Tante may just sound like noise. But to me it is a beautiful "noise" and I hope it can be welcomed for what it is — a wonderful experiment in Chinese popular music.
