Birch Grove, November 13 --- It was nice and calm at noon yesterday, though unusually hot for November. In the evening, dark clouds appeared, and then the lightening and the rain started, and then came the wind. Suddenly, a deadly twister(龙卷风) swept across the small town, leaving at least five people dead and other missing.
Meteorologist(气象学家) Mark Chaves said, “I saw the homes were thrown into lakes and the whole forest was wiped out.” Twisters are common in spring, rare in autumn. But Chaves said that unseasonably warm weather had made all the differences.
Harry Coleman, a local man, was out of town when he got a call from his wife on his cell-phone. She told him that their son and grandson were missing. Others were luckier. John and Rebecca Reilly’s home lost electricity in the rainstorm, but no one was hurt.
Police officer Mike Barton said, “I heard the loud thunder and saw the lightening just before the twister came. Then I watched the twister pick up houses and cars, and throw them like toys.” Police are still searching for the missing, but the heavy fog is making their job more difficult.
As Harry Coleman looked over his broken furniture lying on the ground, he said, “I can’t believe it. Yesterday we had a nice house, and today we don’t even have a toothbrush.”

Shopping on the Internet or shopping online is becoming more and more popular. More and more people are using the Internet to buy things. Why do people use the Internet to shop? Some people say it is more convenient. They don’t have to leave their homes to order something and they can shop for anything they want at any time, day or night. Some people say they can find things for sale that they can’t find in the stores near their homes. Other people say they can find better prices on the Internet.
If you want to buy something on the Internet, you need a credit card(信用卡). You can apply it from a bank. You have to give your credit card number and information to the website which sends them to the store over the Internet.
You have to be sure that the store will not use your information in a wrong way. And if you don’t want someone to get your credit card number and buy something else with it, of course, you should always be careful with your credit card number because people sometimes steal credit card numbers.
For people who are too nervous to shop online, the Internet is a good place for window-shopping. Window-shopping is when you go to a store and look at things for sale, but don’t plan to buy anything. Window-shopping is easy on the Internet. You can see all kinds of things and how much they cost. You can visit stores with branches near you, or you can visit stores that are only on the Internet.
